Thank you for your interest in the library and the Aquarium. I know that the cost sounds high – but there is regular maintenance and upkeep for the fish, as well as repairs and upkeep for the mechanical and plumbing workings of the Aquarium unit. We have worked with our vendor who provides support and maintenance for the Aquarium, and he has reduced his rates for basic maintenance, so if all goes well, the Aquarium will cost us much less than $15,000 annually. However, occasionally, the plumbing of the Aquarium can have problems, and over the past few years we’ve had to do some significant repairs, raising the average rate for maintenance to the $15,000 we have posted in our fundraising information.
Comment by HBPL February 29, 2012 @ 12:22 pmWe will be updating our information, to reflect the reductions we were able to negotiate, but we still need help with the annual costs due to the state of the City budget. If any additional budget reductions happen, and we can’t raise enough to cover our costs, we will have to explore options. Your suggestion of a desert terrarium is one that we have considered. Unfortunately, preliminary estimates for converting the Aquarium over to any other kind of purpose are about $6,000 – $9000, almost as much as we need to cover the current costs for basic maintenance and fish.
We are going to try and do all that we can to maintain this little piece of the ocean at the Library, and so far we have raised over $2,000, so we will be able to keep things going for now.
We were shocked seeing the article in the paper this week on what it is costing to have the 100 gallon aquarium at the main library. The total comes to $15,000 per year. I would think there would be a service that could provide the needed service for a lesser rate.
Comment by Gary, Huntington Beach February 25, 2012 @ 11:31 amIf not I think it should be converted to a desert atmosphere with lizards snakes and the likes. Im sure the kids would enjoy looking at these caricatures as much as the fish and the monthly upkeep would be drastically reduced.
Just a thought out loud.
I love the extensive collection of books, but I would really like it if they could expand the manga collection. Thank you for making me happy!

We love the HB library and the beautiful ambiance it offers–water features, indoor garden area, and picturesque views of the HB Central Park. More importantly, the Children’s Library has so many programs to get children interested in reading. Yesterday after a visit to HBPL, my girls talked about joining the summer reading program again–something they’re really looking forward to (at the age of 5). Thank you!

We love the HB Library, especially all the Children librarians! We have been coming to all of the monthly shows that are so great and in this recession, priced so affordably. Thank you for all that you all do and for the story hours too. We’ll be there tomorrow!
